• General +

Ruawaka is a 63-foot Wharram cruising catamaran that has undergone a substantial refit in New Zealand in 2025.
The refit took approximately five months and included work on the hulls, decks, masts, paintwork, hatches, rigging and other systems in preparation for a long ocean passage.
Following the refit, we sailed Ruawaka from Dunedin / Port Chalmers, New Zealand, to Fiji and subsequently to Vanuatu.
She is currently actively sailed and maintained.

  • History & extra info +

Ruawaka is a fast and capable cruising catamaran. During our current cruising, she has reached speeds of approximately 13 knots on a reach.
As is typical for a Wharram catamaran, the boat has some movement between the hulls and beams, and this can produce noticeable noises while sailing. The boat can also be wet when sailing in strong winds or waves.
The aft mast is not constructed according to the original Wharram plans. It is constructed using a stainless-steel/wood core with Styrofoam and fibreglass to form a round section. It is currently in service and functioning, but a future owner may eventually wish to replace it with a more conventional mast. The mast is positioned aft of the steering pod, as shown in the photographs.
Ruawaka is currently sailed by two people. I am able to raise and lower all sails single-handed, although additional crew naturally makes sail handling easier and safer.
We normally sail with the autopilot engaged, which allows us to spend considerable time on other activities such as cooking and relaxing while underway.
The boat has been actively cruised following the 2025 refit, including the ocean passage from New Zealand to Fiji and onward to Vanuatu.
