  From the owner:
I bought Sazanami from her Dutch carpenter builder, Gerard Janssen, with a view to an extensive refit and later voyaging beyond the horizon. Originally named SUNDOWNER, her construction started in 1994, and the main structure was completed in 2000, when the boat was first launched. Gerard lived on board until 2005, when illness and senility forced his move ashore. From then until my purchase in May 2008, SUNDOWNER lay in Lelystad Marina, Netherlands, enjoying neither use nor maintenance.

Although the boat has had very little use, the deterioration is extensive, considering her age. The beams need substantial refurbishment and most of the decks need to be replaced. The cockpit needs a partial rebuild and the central pod needs repair. The mainsail needs a new wishbone boom, the mast tabernacle needs attention and the foresail boom needs partial rebuild. There are panels in the dagger board slots that must be replaced and the slatted central decking is well past its ‘sell-by’ date. Gerard never finished the interior, and although the accommodation can be used ‘as-is’, I had plans for complete refurbishment.

I removed most of the electrical installation, which was haphazard and non-functional, and generally made SUNDOWNER fit for sea. I sailed her from Lelystad on the Ijsselmeer, through Amsterdam and the North Sea Canal, into the North Sea, and thence to Plymouth via Zeebrugge, Nieuwpoort, Dunkerque and Beaulieu River.

During the first sea leg of the passage, I sailed through rather bad weather (Force 8 Westerly, rough seas from wind over tide). Although I’ve spent much of my life as a professional sailor, I now feel it prudent to reconsider my plans by ‘downsizing’ to a boat I can handle more easily on my own. It’s been a hard decision to make, for the Pahi 42 has everything I want in a cruising boat, but in a package that may just be too much of a challenge for my diminutive 56-year-old frame!
