History

When we picked her up from the River Fal in a bitter January we had to break out through a thin layer of ice near the pontoon where the fresh water from a tributary joined the salt estuary. Inside the saloon, however, we were warm as toast due to the very efficient catalectic heater. The covered wheelhouse and superstructure was also a good barricade to the wind for those on sailing duty in the cockpit.

It was an exhilarating sail back to Plymouth, especially trying to round Dodman Point with tricky wind and tide conditions. It was after this journey and a few more trial sails that we decided we had to improve Anemone’s performance. Her lifting rudders were sluggish in response to steering so we commissioned a boatbuilder to copy the design from later 9m Catalac models for fixed rudders and added skegs.

Both of us found handling the sails awkward compared with our previous yachts so, in order to make sail changes safer and quicker, we installed in-mast reefing for the main and upgraded the furling gear for the jib. Now all sail handling is conveniently carried out from the cockpit. This suited us especially as we did most of our voyages two-handed.

1998 was an expensive year. Not only did we have the rudders and sails done but we had all the rigging renewed, new stainless steel fuel tanks installed, a stern platform fitted for dinghy stowage and a complete overhaul of the port engine. All this paid off, though, as we felt confident that Anemone was seaworthy and a pleasure to sail.

The following years saw a standard maintenance/improvement pattern and regular seasons sailing, sometimes on our own or with friends and at other times in company with yachts from local clubs. We have great memories of this time when Anemone became a home from home and we lived a life tuned in to the elements.

So, why are we selling her? Unfortunately Dave fell seriously ill a couple of years ago and gradually it became obvious that our days of adventure had come to an end. Anemone has lain idle in the yard for 18 months and she really needs a new lease of life with fresh owners. Over the last few months I have taken her through a winter refit and, now that spring has come, she is raring to go. Are you ready to take her on?

I hope so.

*a.. Although Anemone is an elderly lady (Sail No. 59) she has been maintained in general good condition. Recent improvements include specially designed chart table in the aft cabin, relining & re-carpeting bathroom and aft cabin; engine service, anti-fouling, new side screens and wheelhouse cover.
*b.. Quarter berth was removed to accommodate larger fridge when cruising but can be easily reconverted.
*c.. Engines have completely separate systems in each hull. Access to main block and electrics is relatively easy via large compartments and to water pump + alternator belts via internal hatches.
*d.. Main instrument dials on an inboard swinging panel so out of sight when vessel locked up.
*e.. Fire extinguishers and flares now out of date and need replacing.
*f.. Decent standing head room in the galley, wheelhouse and cabins is a big plus for this boat, as is the mammoth amount of storage space for every member of the crew, from galley slave and deckhand to navigator and engineer!
*g.. Welcome on board “Anemone”.
