OVERVIEW:
She has a small comfortable double berth forward and an adequate pilot berth
to starboard below.
Furnishings were renewed 2006 and are Rubber Backed Marine Grade.
A full size chart table and chart store are located to Starboard.
The aft cabin is a cosy double with 6" medium density foam and 3" memory
foam (lush).
Both doubles have anti sweat 1" sprung matting bases. There is ample storage
and access to engine water sea-cocks below this berth.
There is a Solar (hang up shower) which we use in the cockpit.
Stainless Gas Hob/Grill with control protector bar and gas Alarm.
A 3 way Chest Fridge to port with a toilet/washroom to starboard of the
companion way.
CROSS BEAMS:
These are welded Marine Grade Aluminium box sections with tang supports
connected to large internal hoop/u frames making them very stiff extremely
strong and relatively light (the rig hardly moves tack to tack). Surveyors
note; "These are the best I have seen"!
Starship has the benefit of full (solvent free epoxy) osmosis protection
below the water line, and expensive but maintenance free Coppercoat
antifouling system, with confirmation of process/receipt from a professional
coatings company (10+ years life left as never sanded).
EQUIPMENT:
Starship is equipped with Cobra DSC Radio (2009), Furuno Radar, Nasa
Log/Echo, Lowrance Chart Plotter, Fish Finder, Magellan GPS, Programmable
Autohelm (older type but superb). Later type 'more efficient' Eberspacher
Programable Blown air diesel heating with a pipe to the helms feet, New
water tank/piping with Carbon/Silver filter (all ships water tastes as good
as it gets).
MAST & STEERING:
Was replaced in 2007/2010. A 'Z Spars' Mast now stands 50ft from the deck
with LED Tri colour and Anchor light. There is a 'Stack Pack' (2008) with
integral collar and a Hydraulic Boom Vang (no topping lift required). Jibe
preventors fitted.
She has a Full Battened Mainsail. Headsails are older but serviceable and
set well (see pictures). An 11m x 9.3m Spinnaker with Snuffer.
RUDDER:
The rise and fall rudder
(controlled from the cockpit for shoaling) was replaced with an increase of
20% 2010. This provides a nice balance for the extra power of the rig and
she steers beautifully on Hydraulic wheel steering. The bearings were also
recut.
GROUND TACKLE:
A Lofrans Anchor Winch was
fitted 2006. it lifts the 35lb Delta Anchor 2008 with 15ft 12mm chain to a
Stainless heavy duty Swivel then 8mm chain woven to Anchorplait. A Fortress
Guardian stern anchor is also carried with an alloy kedge stored below. |
MACHINERY:
A Fresh water cooled Mitsubishi/Vetus 17/22Hp 3 cylinder Marine Diesel
supplies the power to push her @ 5 knots cruising (1.5 litres per hour or 7
knots max @ 3.5 litres per hour. With the mainsail up the apparent wind
usually brings her up to 6 knots cruising.
A Darglo Marine, Pitch adjustable Feathering propeller, was fitted 2006 @
(£1200). An engine hours meter is fitted into the dash.
There are two raw coolant water inlets incase of blockage!
The Hurth Gearbox Bearings Seals and Selectors were reconditioned in 2009
(receipt available) The Stuffing Box and Cutlass Bearing were also renewed.
Starter motor reconditioned 2010 and a new 80 amp Alternator also 2010.
There is a Sterling Smart Charger giving 14.6 v to the two 110ah leisure
batteries or the 85 ah cranking battery (no panels or wind charger needed).
Powered engine room air evacuation (flexipipe and fan).
The 'contamination proof' fuel system designed by Vetus, consists of a
holding tank amidships under the cabin sole (60 litres approx) from which
fuel is hand pumped as required to a clear poly header tank above the engine
in its own locker (25 litre).
The tanks are always left full with diesel bug preventer added. She is
always refilled from cans via a water separating fine filter.
The batteries have plate cleaning 'bat aids' added twice a year.
BASICS:
The main hull and sponsons were wet bead blasted using the famed 'Farrow
System' to bring her back to the substrate. The above waterline areas were
then re-coated as follows:
2 coats epoxy primer, 2 coats epoxy high protection, 2 coats 2 pack
polyurethane. Coarse kiln dried sand was added to give the decks a final
slip resistant finish.
Upgrades as per survey requirements; New switched whale pumps with non
return valves to the outlets and armoured power supply cable were fitted in
each sponson.
There is a rope cutter on the prop shaft.
TO DO:
The shoreside mains power would benefit from an upgrade (perhaps re-wire to
tripswitches). The present owner rarely uses it and has two earth leak
protectors available.
The netting is ok for dinghy storage (we use harnesses on the jackstays) but
has been repaired and will eventually need replacement.
There is also the possibility of a stunningly beautiful and extremely well
priced south coast mooring.
From the owner:
Overview Starship was built in 1980 by Paul Constantine who wrote a vast
number of articles about his UK circumnavigation and exploits in boating
magazines.Paul is a very helpful and likeable individual with a raft of
information about this vessel. He has expressed that he wishes to stay in
touch with the vessels future owners.
She was designed by Derek Kelsall a Legend in Multihull design. Derek
personally worked closely in the build of this famous Trimaran and her full
evolution and history can be traced with many documents available. |
